Hello. Have 2500 SF outdoor deck in direct sunlight in summer. Needs to be resealed. What is best system to do so? Wood is Ipe. How much would i need of each part of system?

Hello, the IPE Oil or the Defy Hardwood Stain would work well. Prep with the IPE Cleaner first.
You will need about 10 gallons of stain for this and 3 of the Ipe Cleaner:

We have a porch being turned into a sunroom.

I am extremely sensitive to many products and am concerned about using a product like this on a floor which is now open to our house.

Does it have low VOCs? Or is there something else you might recommend.

Thank you!

Look at the Defy Hardwood Stain for less odor.

What is my best bet with a new deck. I live in Knoxville TN, 800 square ft of decking that about 60% will be mostly covered, but due to elevation will get some sun and rain. Deck in 14' off the ground so ground moisture is not an issue. Is it best to wait until next spring and let the wood open up or should I do something within the next month or so. Right now based on reviews looking at Armstrong Clark or IPE Oil.

Your wood requires an annual coating so best to clean and apply one now and every Spring going forward. Either brands would work for you.

I have read that IPE Oil has a strong odor that does not dissipate over time. Is that true? If so, what is the next best product that does not have that issue?

IPE Oil is oil based so it will have an odor when applied. It is a full curing stain so the smell goes away shortly thereafter. A few days, maybe a week. So yes it does dissipate. This is not related to just IPE Oil, but any oil based stain will have an odor when applied and for a short time after.

what is the coverage per sq. ft. for ipe oil?

Depends on the wood type and age. 250-350 per gallon for most exotic wood.

used Ipe Oil deck last year on my boat dock. It ended up dark brown with no grain exposure. i need advice on how to strip or clean and how to avoid this from happening . i am clueless why this happened .

The IPE Oil does have abrown tint to it but it does not mask or hide the wood grain as it is a semi-transparen t. If you want to switch then try the Restore A Deck stripper and pressure washing for the prep. See here for some color samples so you can try a lighter tint:

hello,
I need to re stain my outdoor furniture. When we purchased it, it came with a can of IPE colourguard plus stain. I was curious if the IPE oil you sell will work or do I need to find one that's the right color?

thanks!

It should work as long as you prep correctly.

What would cause rain to wash Ipe Oil off of Tigerwood that is on the side of a building not a deck? The oil was put on 3 weeks before the panels were installed and the next day it rained and washed something off the panels onto stone below. I wiped off any excess within 5-10 minutes of putting the Ipe oil on it.

IPE Oil is a penetrating and fulling curing stain. If this happened then it was unable to penetrate fully or cure properly into the wood. Full cure can take more then a day. This would be due to over applying or improper prep. Basically the stain filmed and dried on the surface instead of in the wood grain and never had time to fully cure before the rain came.

I am building a new set of stairs (uncovered) leading to covered porch plan to use 1x4 Ipe for the stair treads. Southeast exposure with strong sun and exposed to lots of rain/snow/ice.

I have read several of your threads and in some cases you recommend Ipe Oil and others Armstrong Clark - which do you recommend for new wood in my situation?

Also, I have seen some wax based products for Ipe end grain application that are supposed to prevent checking etc. Do you recommend these or do the above products work well for end grain also?

thanks

Either is fine for IPE. No matter which you choose you will need to redo every 9-12 months with IPE in most scenarios. I would not suggest the wax products as they will not blend with the stain and it will stand out.

The iIPE deck was screwed thru the top. Want to use hidden fasteners. How do I patch the screw holes. Want to use the IPE deck oil finish.

You cannot patch with wood filler and have it blend with the IPE. It will not work.

Sharon, mold can grow on "top" of any surface or stain. It is not possible to stop that. Oil based stains sucxh as IPE Oil will have mildewcides in the products that will minimize the growth "in" the stain.

we are installing an IPE deck and would like to retain the natural color but have concerns about an oil finish getting mildew. We don't enjoy cleaning our teak furniture that has teak oil on it and do not want to committ to the same problem with a 500 sq ft deck. Your thoughts?
